Your next scan after 12 weeks is an ultrasound (sonogram). This uses sound waves to create a picture of your baby on the screen. This is a safe scan and can be done at any stage of pregnancy.

The scan doesn’t hurt, but you might need to drink a pint of water before the scan so that it can push up your uterus. This will give you a better image on the scan.

Your sonographer will put a gel on your stomach, tucking tissue paper around the top of your trousers or skirt to protect them. Then they’ll use a probe that has a special shape and moves back and forward over your tummy to give you a picture of your baby on the screen.

Then you’ll be shown the images on the screen, allowing you to point out any features that aren’t clear. The sonographer will then move the screen in a way that gives you the best view of your baby.
